Raised with children. Tips for dog owners with kids.

The phrase “Raised with children”. Tips for dog owners with kids.

As we read through all of the ads that say, “raised with children”, do we really know what that means? Sure it may mean there are kids in the house, and the pups have been around kids. But, that is where it needs to stop. Don’t get the notion that just because there are kids in that house, I can purchase this pup, take it home and everything will be great. It is a horrible but true fact that over 60% of all dog bites involve children. This number could be a lot less if people would be responsible pet owners. So many times people buy a pup with the “dream” that it will automatically be a perfect addition to the family. There need to be guidelines not only for the pup but for everyone that is in contact with a dog or puppy and these guidelines must be followed all of the time.

Children need to be taught the following

Don’t ever tease a dog or puppy

Ask before petting a strange dog

Children can’t dominate a puppy—if they do, this will turn the puppy into a biter

Children must be taught to be gentle with puppies and must always be under adult supervision

Dog owners need to do the following:

Make sure the pup is healthy with proper vaccinations

Have you dog spayed or neutered-this cuts down on the risk of cancer, unwanted puppies, makes dogs less aggressive

Children must always be supervised around dogs

Teach children to never bother a dog that is eating, sleeping, or is caring for puppies

Train the puppy basic commands-“sit”, “stay”, “come” and all family members should do the same, using the same commands

If your dog or puppy is nervous around kids, take the dog to a playground and observe from a distance and as the dog adjusts, move closer—don’t let the dog get out of his comfort zone

As we ring in another year, I would like to take this time to thank all of you who have welcomed a MiniMac miniature schnauzer into their homes. In 06, like past years, I have been blessed to meet many wonderful people, and I do appreciate all of the messages that have been sent. The kind words written reaffirm to me that those that open their homes and hearts to my puppies are the best people in the world. May 2007 be a wonderfully prosperous year for you and your family.

When you decide to get a puppy, don’t take the decision lightly. Give it alot of thought. The puppy will be a member of your family and they deserve your time and devotion. If, after deep thought, you find yourself ready to take the plunge into dog ownership–a miniature schnauzer is an excellent choice. The breed standards for the miniature schnauzer are: 12″-14″ tall and weighing between 11 and 18 pounds. They should have a stocky build, and because of their friendly, alert, and willing to please attitude they make great family pets. Most recognized colors are salt and pepper, black and black and silver and a great selling point that people love is that they don’t shed.

TEACHING YOUR MINIATURE SCHNAUZER TO BE A WELCOME ADDITION TO THE FAMILY

For the past 7 years I have been teaching Dog Obedience to 4-H members in our county. I find this to be very rewarding and it is an honor to work with the young people of our county.

Working with dogs and young people is an ongoing learning process. No two sessions are alike. Some ideas I live by are listed below.

1. Puppies are never to young to learn.
Some people think and let their puppies get away with things that will never be tolerated when they get older. When they are young, people say ,”aren’t they cute!”. People need to ask themselves, “when they are grown, will I find this action so cute?”. Most of the time, the answer is no.

2. Be consistent with your rules.
Everyone involved with the puppy NEEDS to enforce the same rules, that way we are not sending the puppy mixed signals.

3. Puppies learn by repetition.
Don’t expect them to pick up a new skill the first time you teach them. It takes lots of time and patience.

4. Praise, praise, praise!!
This is one saying that 4-H members really hear me stress. LIke kids–dogs love praise. Praise reinforces the correct behavior.

5. Never hit your dog.
Abusing a dog, is never tolerated by me. If you feel frustrated and are disgusted about how things are going, remove yourself from the situation and COOL DOWN.

6. When working on a new command or trick. Practice it for short periods of time and always finish a “learning session” by going back over something they already know how to do. This builds confidence in the puppy.
